With the accelerating development of our society, arts and athletics have been playing two important roles in our daily life. It is hard to judge which of the two has more significance. While some people are advocators who insist that governments should fund the arts, some others believe athletics need more attention and investment. From my perspective, I think more money should be spent on supporting athletics than on supporting arts.

To begin with, sports means more than arts to some degree because sports activities cater for people of all ages, and may have far-reaching effect on people’s life. If government provides more sports opportunities and better sports facilities, all age groups will benefit from it. For example, the government of Shanghai provides many local schools with sports fund. These schools use the money to invite professional coaches and buy new sports apparatus, and cultivate students with more systemic and scientific trainings. With new sports facilities, many students are more willing to get involved in sports games. During the process, they improve physical health, overcome difficulties and learn to cooperate with others. When these children grow up, most of them will have formed a habit of taking part in exercise regularly, and they are able to bear more pressure from life and work than those who seldom or never take exercise. Even when they are getting old, they live longer and healthier lives. Undoubtedly, sports affect people for lifetime. However, the influence of art is limited, and it is not suitable for everyone. It is known that art is somehow obscure and pluralistic. An art work may contain different and several meanings. Some arts reflect the dark side of society, even then, some are extremely bloody and pornographic, which may have serious impact on people’s mental health.

Secondly, in consideration of economic benefits, government should invest money on sports. Compared with an art exhibition, a sports competition generally appeals to a wider audience and attract more social attention. Thus，it can also generate more economic returns. For example, Olympics, which symbolizes freedom and equality, can get major publicity, so companies all over the world are willing to pay millions of sponsorships to publicize their products by providing athletes with sportswear and the most advanced sports equipment. This may bring more economic benefit for these companies in the future. In this way, both the Olympic organizers as well as the companies will make a profit out of it. However, the impact of art on economy may be quite limited. Art is sometimes too elegant, insular, with small audience. Only people who are interested in art will shell out so much for art exhibitions or works of art. Maybe some artists can gain money by selling or exhibiting their artworks, but arts can rarely generate vast economic returns for the nation.

Undeniably, neither arts nor sports are unimportant. The relation between artists and athletes are interactive, since athletes represent the national physical strength and artists represent the national mental strength. But as for a country, we need our people to be physically strong first, because a healthy body is the basis for people to carry out all activities. Only with stronger body can our citizens input themselves better into study and work, create more economic value, and improve nation’s overall fighting capacity.

In conclusion, combining all the reasons and details that have been mentioned above, I would support the idea that the government ought to give athletics more patronage than arts.
