选项分析：

(A)ranks as the nation's third leading cause of death, surpassed only

【正确】 “Diabetes”虽然结尾有“s”但实际上是单数形式，和“ranks”保持了主谓一致。

【大意】 糖尿病，及其严重的并发症，名列国家第三大死亡原因，仅仅被心脏病和癌症超过。

(B)rank as the nation's third leading cause of death, only surpassed

【错误1】 主谓一致：“together with its serious

complications”中的“it”指代“Diabetes”，由此可知“Diabetes”为单数或不可数概念，迎接单数谓语动词，本选项主谓不一致。

【错误2】 句子意思：词语位置变化可能会影响语义。(A)选项为“surpassed only by heart disease and

cancer”，大意为“仅仅被心脏病和癌症两种病超过”，言下之意是没有被第三个超过，位居第二;(B)选项为“only surpassed

【错误2】

简洁明了：在GMAT语法题中，表达同一个意思时简洁性从高到低依次为动词、形容词和副词、一般名词、动名词(简称VANing原则：V——verb，A——adj.或adv.，N——noun，ing——动名词)。因此动词(A)中“ranks”优于(B)中名词“rank”。
