According to a recent poll, owning and living in a freestanding house on its

own land is still a goal of a majority of young adults, like that of earlier

generations.

(A) like that of earlier generations

(B) as that for earlier generations

(C) just as earlier generations did

(D) as have earlier generations

(E) as it was of earlier generations

选项分析：

(A)like that of earlier generations

【错误】 句子意思：语法上没有比较结构“like that of earlier generations”与“a goal of a majority

of young adults”，但“like”用于比较仅仅能表达“that(the goal)of earlier generations”与“a goal

of a majority of young adults”相似，并不能向(E)表达“owning and living……”是“a goal of a

majority of young adults”就像“it”(平行指代“owning and living……”)是“that of earlier

generations”的含义。因此表意逊于(E)

(B)as that for earlier generations

【错误】

比较结构：本选项本意是用“as”引导比较句式，并对“as”之后的比较从句进行省略。如果我们将省略得部分不全，那么完整的比较句式应该是：owning and

living in a freestanding house on its own land is still a goal of a majority of

解题思路：

看见比较找比较对象，比较对象如果不是平行且可比的就要排除选项。本题中只有“owning and living in a freestanding

house on its own land is still a goal of a majority of young adults, as it was

of earlier generations”是正确的，省略后的比较句式，其中“it”指代“owning and living……”，因此“it

was”与前半句的“owning and living……is”平行，“of earlier generations”与前半句中“of a majority

of young adults”平行，而“it was”与“of”之间省略了“a

goal”，但这种省略并没有产生歧义。(A)选项虽然没有明显语法错误，但表意没有(E)准确合理，因此选择(E)。
