Globalization and internet create conditions for widening international

exchanges of books and films, in which the way of life is depicted and the ethic

standards is conveyed. In consequence, some people support the assertion that

there is no need for us to travel abroad to learn exotic culture. Personally

speaking, however, I disagree with this assertion as it underestimates the

importance of first-hand experience.

To commence with, the books and movies can never replace the real places. No

matter how vivid the scenes are, they are merely images and words and can never

be liken to historical sites or natural wonders that tourists see in real or

even might be allowed to touch with their fingers. The difference can be

compared to seeing the picture of a mango rather than eating it.

In addition, paying a visit to foreign countries is a rewarding experience in

many respects. For one thing, it is an unparalleled chance to be immersed in the

extoic traditional customs. Take my experience as an example. When I visited the

kasuga Shrine in Nara (a city in Japan), a wedding ceremony was being hold in

the temple.

The priest hosted the ritual in the name of God, expressing the blessing

meanwhile the new couple were required to blow deeply to the divinity. As a

viewer, I was so impressed by the solemn atmosphere and sincere beliefs. For

another thing, to taste local cuisine is a great joy for foodies. Despite the

fact that travelers have access to foreign dishes in their own countries, seldom

can they savor an authentic flavor due to several factors such as the freshness

of ingredients and chef’s cooking skills. Under such circumstance, it is hard

for them to appreciate the glamour of traditional food culture.

In conclusion, all these broaden visitors’ horizons and enable them to

experience something refreshing and enlightening. Conversely, the passive

activity of seeing something in paper or on screens fails to satisfy people’s

demands of being involved in the exploration and learning of appealing cultures

of alien countries.(341 words)
