Task：

Multicultural societies, where people of different ethnic groups live

together, can bring more benefits than drawbacks to a country. To what extent do

you agree or disagree?

Sample answer：

When it comes to the phenomenon that there are more residents who come from

different regions and areas in a country, some people may argue that it could

bring more benefits to a country, but I cannot agree with this opinion.

Admittedly, residents of different ethnic groups could benefit a country

since the society could be more open-minded. If residents in a country all

belong to a same ethnic group, when outsiders visit or live there, they may be

discriminated by some local people more or less. However, if a country consists

of people with various races, it will be more welcomed by outsiders since there

may not be a dominant race. Then, countries may benefit from such a phenomenon

with more residents, as well as more opportunities of development. Nevertheless,

its drawbacks may overshadow the benefits acquired.

Initially, more social conflicts may occur with many ethnic groups’

residents. It is acknowledged that different races have different customs and

habits. For example, if a citizen came to a Muslim restaurant and intended to

order a menu with pork, obviously, such behavior would lead to severe fighting

between the restaurant and the consumer since the restaurant would feel deeply

insulted. Thus, to balance and maintain the social order in such a multicultural

country is actually a big challenge for the authority.

Furthermore, the cultural identity of a country may be lost as a consequence.

When people of different ethnic groups dwell jointly, inevitably, they will be

mutually influenced by each other in terms of their daily habits. A potential

problem is that local people may refuse to accept their old-fashioned customs

and even rituals if they have tried new types of modern life. Then, even though

the life quality of local people may be upgraded much, a trade-off is that their

history may be abandoned as well.

In sum, considering the potential social chaos and the risk of losing

cultural characteristics, a country may be very cautious towards such a tendency

brought by the contemporary globalization.
